BECA 580 in El Salvador
Students from BECA 580 arrived in San Salvador, El Salvador, early Thursday morning, ready for their production project with Manos de Esperanza (Hands of Hope). A group of 17 BECA folks settled into a lovely former mansion that is now the Hotel Alamo Internacional in a residential neighborhood in San Salvador. The six guys share a large room with a spa-like shower; the remaining 11 women are in rooms of 3 and 4, with plenty of hangars and views of the lush grounds. The hotel has a pool, and the sleep-deprived students took a quick dip before napping off the jet lag after their overnight flight.
Our very fortunate residence contrasts markedly with the purpose of the video. Manos, based in Antioch, CA, and San Salvador, was formed after Hurricane Mitch. The organization provides disaster relief, school supplies and scholarships to Salvadorans who are still in the country. (More Salvadorans have left the country for the United States than still live in El Salvador.) The students will produce two videos for the organization. One will describe the work of Manos de Esperanza and make a direct request for donations to the organization; it will appear on the organization's website. The other will be a longer piece to inform Salvadorans, particularly young people, both in El Salvador and outside, about the history of violence in El Salvador.
Today, Thursday, the people who work with Manos de Esperanza here welcomed us with a Salvadoran meal of papusas, tamales, and fried bananas filled with beans (called "canoas" or "canoes"). Corn is the staple of the Salvadoran diet; both the tamales and the papusas we ate were based on corn. The students met in their two production teams and continued work on the treatments for their respective videos. One of the teams - Team Paco - takes its name from the parrot that sits in the yard, close to the pool. The students peppered the folks from Manos with questions about El Salvador, our itinerary, and production possibilities.
This is the sixth trip out of the country for BECA 580 (Media and Community Service), taught by Professor Betsy Blosser. Molly O'Neil, a BECA graduate student, is supervising the production. Check this website for updates on the trip and project.
