Guatemala Bound!
A group of ten BECA students and faculty depart for Guatemala on Thursday evening (or, technically, Friday morning - 12:15 AM!) to work with the Transitions Foundation of Guatemala for three-and-a-half weeks.
The backstory:
Media and Community Service is back - under a new title and a new number! The courses, Electronic Media and Social Justice I & II (or BECA 581 and 582), replace BECA 580 as the two-course sequence in which students produce a video for a local, not-for-profit organization in the spring, and then travel to another country to produce a video for a non-governmental organization (NGO) in that country in the summer.
During the spring semester, eight BECA students, guided by Production Coordinator Peter Rollins and Professor Betsy Blosser, shot a video for Whirlwind Wheelchairs, the organization located in SFSU's College of Science and Engineering that makes wheelchairs distributed all around the world. This spring, Whirlwind received FDA approval to sell its Rough Rider wheelchair in the U.S. - the first U.S. sales for this non-profit organization. The BECA class produced a video to promote the sale of that wheelchair.
Simultaneously, the group prepared to travel to Haiti to work with one of Whirlwind's partner organizations in that earthquake-devastated country. But mid-semester, travel plans changed, due to a U.S. State Department Travel Advisory against travel by U.S. citizens to Haiti. (SFSU does not allow students or faculty to travel on university-sponsored trips under those conditions.) Although the group was disappointed, we learned that Whirlwind Wheelchair has another partner organization in Antigua, Guatemala.
This organization - Transitions - provides disabled Guatemalans with wheelchairs and prostheses. We have been asked to shoot a video that follows two people - one who will receive a wheelchair and one who will receive a prosthesis - from their small villages to Antigua to the Transitions Foundation and back to their villages.
This week, students are putting the finishing touches on the post-production for the Whirlwind/Rough Rider video. And they will meet at the BECA Cage on Wednesday for an equipment check. Then it's off to the airport on Thursday evening for the flight to Guatemala.
