Back to School

Today, it was easiest to split up to cover the most ground. Three folks went back to the wheelchair workshop to shoot B-roll and to interview a few of the young men who work there. The rest of us went back to the classroom at San Antonio Aguas Calientes to begin interviewing children and staff. We started with a visit to Rodney's home, which is less than a block away from the school. Rodney's mother and grandmother both are weavers, and they sell their weavings to help support the family. It is beautiful work - embroidery on top of woven fabric. Usually, Transitions doesn't provide housing for its clients, but in this case, Transitions built the home for Rodney and his family. Afterwords, we interviewed children one by one. Each of the children who were in the presentation yesterday gave us interviews. We were also able to talk with the mother of a four or five-year-old child with cerebral palsy. A physical therapist visited the school earlier in the year, and taught the mother exercises to do with her son. The mother comes to the school two or three times a week so the school can make sure that she continues with the exercises. Contact with the school also gives her a chance to socialize with other parents of disabled children, which is a real bonus for her. And it allows Transitions to keep track of her and her child so services can continue as the child gets older. The mother, Rosa, and her son are pictured above, top.
