Last Day in Antigua

This is our last full day in Antigua. Most of us will go to the Mayan site of Copán, just over the border in Honduras, over the weekend. We leave at 4:00 AM (no, that's not a typo) on Saturday, and return sometime Sunday evening. On Monday, we leave for the airport at 6:30 AM.

This morning, we had no particular schedule, so we each spend our last hours in our own way. This afternoon, we went to Transitions for a goodbye ceremony. Transitions made each of us a certificate of appreciation, which they presented to us. There were speeches, some tearful, from the students and the Tranaitions folks. It has been an inspiring, educational and rich experience - and it's my sense that the learning has gone both ways. In the photo, you see producer Jean-Pierre Bitchoka receiving his certificate.

Then, of course, we went to watch the guys play basketball. It's Friday, after all. During the week, a truck backed into one of the basketball hoops and knocked it over, so Transitions brought over a "portable" hoop, stored at their workshop, for today's practice. Alex Galvez, the Executive Director, made a call to the mayor about the broken hoop, and yesterday, they sent out an architect to look at the mess. The hope is that the hoop will be replaced quickly - actually, the hope is that BOTH hoops will be replaced, but this time with regulation height hoops. Unfortunately, we won't be here to see it. But the guess is this will be fixed quickly, as the mayor's wife is a Transitions supporter. Ah, politics . . .
